You don’t need to be an expert or a teacher to pass on what you have learned so far. We all accumulate knowledge. We all discover some truth along the way. Why keep it only to yourself?
Many managers underestimate the added value they can bring to their teams on soft and hard skills. Teaching is an act of generosity, a moment of intimacy. With the passing of information, an invisible bond is created forever.
Teaching is most valuable when you identify the need and how the person likes to be addressed. Some people like hard facts, some people are visual learners, some people want to feel like they are not being thought, and the list goes on. It is not one size fits all.
There is an assumption on the direction of teaching; the manager being the teacher and the team being the students — such an old-fashioned view. In a constantly changing world, we must keep former generations up to speed. No matter our age, we are all entitled to teach.
What if we make it a reflex to lift everyone around us at work? Our teams. Our bosses. Our ecosystems. Our consumers.
One can also teach their failures and what we learned if we have to courage to do so. Such relatable information gets the point more effectively while creating a sense of togetherness.
