We have all been there. Sometimes you want to stay in bed. Not pick up phone calls. Not respond to your messages. Not see another human being.
Such moments also come by when you are a manager. You might feel drained, and you don’t have anything to give. You might have a lousy week personally or professionally, which leaves you out of positive energy.
Leaders are human, but they have a serious job to do; lead. Simon Sinek says, « Leadership is putting the needs of others ahead of our own. It’s not about being “in charge,” it’s about taking care of those “in your charge.” .» So even if you don’t feel like it, duty calls.
HIGHs & LOWs is such an effortless and authentic team activity, simply having it weekly on your schedule puts you in the right mood: the giving spirit.
We think we are making a living by what we get at work, but it is more than that. We make a life by what we give, including the office.
In my career, one of the saddest things I have seen was lousy manager’s retirement parties. After decades of bad management, they proudly mention their professional successes, which are long history. And in the room, there is no action. No interaction. No human connection. No one feels like they would miss the lousy manager; they are there to be polite by social obligation.
It can be HIGHs & LOWs or something else; just find the ways where you can give back to your team frequently. Let it give you the drive to keep walking, even on cloudy days. You won’t regret it.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
Winston Churchill
